If you have been following astrology content recently, you have probably heard about the Barbault Basket. Named after French astrologer André Barbault, this rare configuration of outer planets has been described as a “splendid relaunch of civilization” and “the most beneficial astrological configuration of the century.” Astrologers are excited about it, talking about collective evolution, technological breakthroughs, and a new era of cooperation. But there is a problem with this narrative. The Barbault Basket is not what everyone claims it is, and pretending otherwise is doing everyone a disservice.
The Original Prediction
André Barbault was a respected astrologer who developed a method called the Cyclic Index to measure how tightly the outer planets cluster together over time. In his 1993 book, he wrote that around 2026, this alignment would mark the beginning of a new world civilization. He called it a “splendid relaunch.”
But here is what people conveniently leave out. Barbault also predicted a global crisis around 2020, which many now associate with the pandemic. He saw crisis first, then recovery. He did not envision a smooth, painless awakening but chaos followed by rebuilding. The online hype has distorted his original work beyond recognition.
The Missing Pieces
When Pluto was last in Aquarius, from 1778 to 1798, the world experienced the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, and the Enlightenment. But what no one mentions is that Neptune was in Virgo and Libra during that period, while Uranus was in Gemini and Cancer.
Those are very different planetary energies than what we have now. This time, while Pluto is in Aquarius transforming the collective, Neptune is in Aries dissolving boundaries around identity and creating spiritual warriors, and Uranus is in Gemini disrupting communication and creating chaos in the information space. Saturn is also in Aries, adding a rigid and uncompromising energy to the mix. This is a completely different combination of energies. This is not the Enlightenment. This is something much darker and more volatile.
The Dark Triad
What we are dealing with is essentially a dark triad of transits. Pluto in Aquarius demands the collective restructure society. Neptune in Aries dissolves the individual ego, making people more susceptible to group identity and charismatic leaders. Uranus in Gemini shatters the information landscape, making it difficult to discern truth from illusion and enabling the rapid spread of radical ideas. This specific combination creates a volatile environment where passionate conviction meets fragmented truth. It is not gentle collective evolution. It is conflict, chaos, and ideological warfare.
The Cult Behavior
One of the most concerning aspects of this alignment is how it fosters cult-like behavior. When group identity becomes everything and individual identity becomes nothing, people become susceptible to leaders who claim to speak for the collective. The group becomes the source of truth, and anyone who questions the group is seen as a traitor. This is exactly what we are seeing in both politics and spirituality. Movements are forming that demand absolute loyalty and punish dissent. Critics are dismissed as elitist gatekeepers. Intellectual rigor is sacrificed for belonging. The Hellenistic revival in astrology is a perfect example of this dynamic playing out in a niche community, but it is happening everywhere.
The Black and White Thinking
This alignment also promotes black and white thinking. In a world where information is fragmented and truth feels uncertain, people retreat to simple answers. You are either with us or against us. This system is true and all others are false. This leader is good and all others are evil. This ideology is correct and all others are corrupt. There is no room for nuance, complexity, or the understanding that multiple things can be true at the same time. This is the energy of revolution without compassion. It is the French Revolution, not the American Revolution. It is the Reign of Terror, not the Enlightenment.
The Anti-Intellectualism
The Barbault Basket also fosters anti-intellectualism. When collective inclusion is the highest value, expertise becomes elitism. When belonging is the priority, critical thinking becomes divisive. When group harmony is the goal, questioning becomes betrayal. This is why the astrology community is seeing such a strong reaction against anyone who questions whole sign houses or any other sacred cow. It is not about the truth. It is about protecting the group. Intellectual courage is replaced by emotional loyalty. Expertise is dismissed as gatekeeping. This is not progress. This is regression dressed up as revolution.
The Overhyped Promise
The astrologers who are spinning the Barbault Basket as purely positive are cherry-picking the harmonious aspects and ignoring the oppositions and squares that are also part of the picture. At the heart of this configuration lies a Jupiter-Pluto opposition, which creates tension between the desire for expansion and the need for deep structural change.
This is not a gentle push but a clash of titanic forces. Some astrologers acknowledge this tension but argue that the harmonious aspects from Uranus and Neptune can serve as a catalyst for new solutions. That requires ignoring the violent and uncompromising nature of the energies involved and believing that transformation through conflict is somehow peaceful.
The Reality of Revolution
Everyone assumes revolution means progress. But revolutions can go in any direction. Right now, we are in a regressive revolution—one that pretends to be about liberation but is actually about control, promising freedom while delivering conformity. When people are afraid, when the future feels uncertain, when the present feels unbearable, they will accept any change, even if it takes them backward. They will follow any leader who promises to save them. They will join any group that offers certainty. This is the dark side of the collective impulse, and this is what Pluto in Aquarius produces when filtered through Neptune in Aries and Uranus in Gemini.
The Convergence: Chinese Astrology Confirms the Warning
If my analysis of the Barbault Basket were an isolated interpretation within Western astrology, one might dismiss it as merely one astrologer’s perspective. But a completely independent tradition, with its own framework and methodology, is pointing to the same conclusion. In 2024, Chinese Feng Shui and astrology entered the Nine Purple Fire Period, a 20-year cycle running from 2024 to 2043 and governed by the fire element. The parallels with Pluto in Aquarius are striking. Both systems describe this period as one of intense transformation, volatility, and rapid change. The fire element corresponds to technology, electronics, and media, while Pluto in Aquarius similarly points to explosive growth in AI, decentralized systems, and digital democracy.
This is where the overhyped narrative falls apart. The Nine Purple Fire Period carries a warning: “external brilliance, internal emptiness.” While society may appear prosperous on the surface, inner spiritual and psychological struggles will intensify. The technology and innovation we celebrate will come with a cost. The collective transformation we anticipate will bring volatility, conflict, and the need for careful navigation. The convergence of these two independent systems—developed in complete isolation from each other—should give us pause. This is not something to dismiss or over-glorify. It is something to take seriously. The astrologers spinning the Barbault Basket as purely positive are not just ignoring the dark side of Western astrology; they are ignoring the wisdom of another entire tradition warning us about the very same things.
The Hard Truth
The Barbault Basket is not a positive thing. It is powerful, intense, and transformative, but it is not positive. It is simply happening. The potential for growth exists, but growth through violence and chaos is still violence and chaos. The astrologers spinning this as positive are either naive, delusional, dishonest, or complicit. They are participating in the very energy they should be warning people about. The only way through this is to stay grounded, stay clear, and refuse to get swept up in the collective energy. It means refusing to surrender your thinking to the group, refusing to let the chaos make you afraid, and refusing to let the uncompromising energy make you uncompromising.
What We Need to Remember
The last time Pluto was in Aquarius, the collective rose up against oppressive authority. This time, the collective is becoming the oppressive authority. Revolution is not always progress. Belonging is not the same as truth. Inclusion should not come at the cost of intellectual rigor.
Every transit has a shadow, and pretending otherwise is spiritual bypass. The Barbault Basket is not a “splendid relaunch of civilization.” It is a volatile, conflict-ridden, deeply challenging period of transformation. The planets involved are not cooperative. The signs involved are not harmonious. The energy is intense, uncompromising, and often violent. This is not something to celebrate. It is something to navigate with your eyes open and your integrity intact.
