I’d written the book, designed a cover, and was ready to hit publish. What I didn’t realize was that Kindle has its own set of rules—many of which I only discovered along the way. Whether you’re a first-time indie author or a seasoned publisher moving into digital, here are seven things I wish I’d known before working with Kindle ebooks.

1. Kindle Sets Limits on Your Ebook Price

One of the first surprises I encountered was that Kindle has a set limit on how much you can sell your ebook version for. You can’t simply pick any price you want—there’s a ceiling.

The good news? Recently, they increased the price levels. I found out just in time, as I was uploading my new book to sell on Kindle. That small price increase allowance can make a big difference for authors wanting to sell digital. It may not sound like much, but when you’re selling hundreds or thousands of copies, every dollar counts—and it gives you more room to position your book competitively while still earning a fair royalty.

If you’re planning your pricing strategy, check the current Kindle price limits before you finalize your launch plan.

2. Kindle Ebooks Don’t Need ISBNs

This one was a relief. Kindle ebooks do not require ISBNs. If you don’t plan on publishing a print version of your book, you can skip the entire process of getting your own ISBNs—which saves you both money and time.

For authors who are going digital-only, this removes a significant barrier to entry. You can publish your ebook without ever worrying about purchasing ISBNs, registering them, or dealing with the associated paperwork. Just keep in mind that if you do decide to release a print version later, you’ll need an ISBN at that point. Though they offer a free one, it will trap your book’s ISBN in their system, so it’s not recommenced.

3. Your Cover Design Needs to Be Adaptable

When you design your book cover, you should also keep in mind that you might need to have your design adaptable for different dimensions. Kindle ebooks have their own dimensions: 625 x 1000 pixels.

You need to keep these dimensions in mind, or Kindle will reject your cover—or worse, it will look weird when it’s uploaded. A cover that looks stunning on your screen at one size may end up stretched, cropped, or distorted on Kindle if it doesn’t meet their specifications.

My advice: design your cover with these dimensions in mind from the start, and always double-check the requirements before uploading.

4. Kindle Automatically Enrolls Your Book in Their ACX Program—Claim Your Audiobook Rights

Here’s one that caught me off guard: Kindle automatically enrolls your book in their ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) program. This means your book becomes eligible for audiobook production, whether you intended it or not.

The problem? If you don’t claim your audiobook rights, scammers might try to claim your book and produce an audiobook without your permission. That’s a nightmare scenario for any author.

Take action: Log into your ACX account and explicitly claim your audiobook rights after your book goes live. Don’t leave this to chance—protect your work before someone else tries to profit from it.

5. Format Your Print Book First, Then Rework It for Kindle

Formatting your book for Kindle is a bit tricky. My recommendation? Format your print book first, and then take that same file and rework it for Kindle only after you’re satisfied with your print version.

Why? Because otherwise, you’ll be making revisions twice. Every time you tweak your print layout, you’ll have to go back and redo the same changes for your ebook. Get your print version locked in first, and then adapt it for Kindle. This workflow will save you hours of duplicated effort and frustration.

6. Use a Proper Table of Contents—And Don’t Rely on Special Formatting

For Kindle, you need to use a table of contents. The good news is that Pages can easily do this by setting up your Styles correctly. A properly structured TOC makes navigation easy for readers and helps your book function the way Kindle expects.

But here’s the catch: any special formatting—like additional indentations—will disappear once the Kindle process is completed. So make sure your text isn’t relying on those indentations to convey meaning or structure. What looks perfect in your original document may not survive the conversion, so keep your formatting simple and intentional.

7. Check Your Preview Repeatedly—And Give Yourself Plenty of Time

You will have to check your preview over and over, which will get tedious and frustrating. That’s just the reality of publishing on Kindle.

My advice: give yourself lots of time to mess around with formatting and check that it uploads the way you want it. Don’t rush the process. The preview tool is your best friend, but it can also be your biggest source of frustration if you’re on a tight deadline. Build in extra time for revisions, and don’t be surprised if it takes many rounds before everything looks right.

Final Thoughts

Publishing on Kindle comes with its own set of rules, and most of them aren’t obvious until you’re in the middle of the process. From pricing limits and ISBN requirements to cover dimensions, audiobook rights, EPUB formatting, table of contents setup, and endless preview checks, knowing these details ahead of time can save you a lot of headaches.

If you’re getting ready to publish your first Kindle ebook, take the time to research the current guidelines—and don’t be afraid to learn as you go. Every book you publish teaches you something new.

Have you published on Kindle? What surprised you most about the process? Let me know in the comments.

When I published my first ebook on Kindle, I thought I had it all figured out.
