There is a lot of talk about deconstructing Christianity on TikTok and beyond. People are leaving the church, questioning dogma, and rejecting the rigid beliefs they were raised with. But there is another belief system that rarely gets the same level of scrutiny: spirituality itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new age spiritual movement presents itself as free, open, and accepting. There are no doctrines, no holy books, no authorities telling you what to think. But that does not mean it is free of dogma. It just means the dogma is harder to see. The terms we use, the ideas we inherit, and the communities we join all come with their own hidden assumptions \u2014 assumptions that often go unquestioned because they are wrapped in light and love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is time to deconstruct spirituality and look closely at what we believe and why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most of us did not arrive at our spiritual beliefs through careful investigation. We absorbed them from our environment. A book. A mentor. A YouTube video. A friend who seemed enlightened. We adopted the language, the practices, and the worldview without stopping to ask where they came from or whether they were true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many concepts in modern spirituality come from traditions that were shaped by misogyny, racism, and hierarchy. They were not born from pure truth. They were born from cultures that excluded women, colonized others, and elevated some people above others. When we adopt these ideas without examining their origins, we inherit not just the wisdom \u2014 but the baggage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is why spiritual communities can feel cult-like. There is an unspoken pressure to agree, to accept, and to not question. You are either “awake” or “asleep.” You are either a lightworker or still trapped in the matrix. The language creates an in-group and an out-group, just like any religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the clearest examples of this is how Western spirituality has taken Buddhist and Hindu ideas and repackaged them for Western taste. Meditation, mindfulness, and karma have been stripped of their cultural and religious context and presented as universal techniques. But what is left out is just as important as what is taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Western practitioners often reject Buddhist deities, cosmology, and the monastic tradition. They want the benefits without the commitment, the peace without the practice, the wisdom without the tradition. This is not syncretism \u2014 it is colonialism. They take what feels comfortable, ignore the rest, and present the fragments as complete truth while the cultures they took them from are still practicing the full tradition, often dismissed or exoticized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A real Asian Buddhist practices within a framework of community, tradition, and reverence for the dharma \u2014 not just as a self-help tool. The goal is often world-renunciation and reaching a state beyond the self. Western Buddhism, by contrast, is often focused on this life \u2014 inner peace, psychological benefits, and being more “untroubled” in daily life. The difference is not just about practice. It is about worldview, and it reveals how much of what we call spirituality is shaped by cultural borrowing rather than genuine transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Spirituality is full of jargon. Lightworker. Starseed. Ascended master. Christed. Twin flame. These terms are not neutral. They are identity markers. They make you feel special. They make you feel chosen. They give you a place in a cosmic hierarchy that elevates you above others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The problem is not the terms themselves. It is what they do to the person using them. Once you adopt a label, you become defensive of it. You stop questioning it. You start interpreting everything through it. Your identity becomes tied to the label, and questioning the label feels like questioning yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is how people get stuck. They stop growing. They stop examining. They cling to a narrative that makes them feel special, even when it no longer serves them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Letting go of a belief is not just intellectual \u2014 it is emotional. The ego attaches itself to beliefs. It uses them to build identity, certainty, and a sense of superiority. When you question a belief, the ego feels threatened. It fights back. It defends. It dismisses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deconstructing spiritual beliefs requires dismantling the ego’s attachment to being special, right, and chosen. Past life claims are a perfect example. Claiming to be reincarnations of Cleopatra, John Lennon, or an ascended master gives the ego a grandiose identity. It makes you feel unique. But it also traps you. You cannot let go of the claim without letting go of the identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is why past life fixation is so often unhelpful. It keeps you looking backward instead of forward. It gives you a story to cling to instead of work to do in the present. It is a distraction from genuine growth \u2014 a way for the ego to feel important while avoiding the real work of healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Old-fashioned ideas carry the baggage of the old world. They come from times when hierarchy, exclusion, and control were the norm. Holding onto them keeps us stuck in the past and prevents us from moving toward the place of love and unity that many spiritual traditions claim to seek. It is time to release what does not serve growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the biggest myths about spiritual communities is that they are open-minded. But in reality, they are often just as rigid as the religions they claim to reject. Questioning a channeled message is seen as a lack of faith. Doubting a past-life claim is seen as being unawakened. Challenging the group’s beliefs is often met with defensiveness, not curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had my own bias against channeled information. I used to think it was likely self-deception or projection. But then I encountered Human Design. Its origins are questionable, and yet I could not deny its usefulness. I had to give up my bias and accept mystery. That was not easy. It required me to admit that my initial judgment was incomplete, and to hold something that did not fit neatly into my existing framework. That is what genuine openness looks like \u2014 not clinging to certainty, but being willing to adjust when evidence challenges your assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deconstructing spirituality is not about rejecting everything. It is about reclaiming your own discernment. It is about looking closely at what you believe and why. It is about freeing yourself from inherited dogma, whether that dogma comes from a church or a channeled message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When you stop clinging to identity markers and start examining your beliefs, you create space for genuine growth. You stop needing to be right. You stop needing to be special. You just become open \u2014 and that is where real transformation happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Old-fashioned ideas, past-life fantasies, and spiritual jargon are not just harmless quirks. They are weights that keep us from moving forward. They carry the baggage of the old world \u2014 hierarchy, exclusion, and the need to be above others. If we truly want to reach a place of love and unity, we have to be willing to examine what we hold onto and let go of what no longer serves us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
